What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable?

Biodegradable describes a material that can be broken down by microorganisms under suitable conditions. Compostable describes a material that meets recognised standards for breakdown under defined composting conditions. Compostable materials are biodegradable, but not all biodegradable materials are compostable.
