New Years Letter from Solinatra Chairman

What a great year 2022 has been, all the best wishes for 2023!

2022 showed a major shift in the transition to biomaterials replacing fossil plastics, and 2023 has all the signs up for even greater changes. Solinatra® is excited to be a part of that transition as a fully biodegradable, 100% plant-based bio-resin.

Broad recognition of bio-resins

Last year bioplastics like Solinatra were recommended by the United Nations as a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil plastics, and the EU released a draft revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive encouraging the transition to alternative materials, as did other regions like Australia. The USA already introduced regulations to reduce the use of polluting plastics, again in favor of materials like Solinatra.

Awards for Solinatra

Our innovation also caught the attention of the broader community. Solinatra was honored to win the United Kingdom FSB Innovation and Sustainability Award at both regional and national award events. We were also nominated for the British Chambers of Commerce award, one of the UK’s most prestigious business awards. The judges were impressed by our innovative approach to tackling a global issue and creating truly sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.

Also, the RVO – The Enterprise Agency of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate as well as other institutions around the globe expressed interest in the solution Solinatra offers. Businesses and policymakers recognize and embrace the value and importance of bioplastics like Solinatra as an affordable and effective solution to solve the increasing problems posed by plastic pollution.

Products made of Solinatra

Over the course of 2022, our customers launched cutlery made of Solinatra in multiple countries. Coffee pods made of Solinatra are on the market in Scotland already and pods for Nespresso® compatible and other formats will soon come to other countries too. Also, a variety of other products made of Solinatra will go to market in 2023.

Easy processibility

During 2022 we exhibited in 12 trade shows and conferences around the world, sharing our innovative materials with thousands of policymakers, manufacturers, brands and consumers. Beginning our events calendar in March with the World Expo in Dubai, UAE – where we were offered to show our material in the Netherlands Pavilion, and ending with the Plast Eurasia trade show in Istanbul, Türkiye in November. At the K-show in Dusseldorf, Germany, we were thrilled FANUC was showcasing the easy processability of our sustainable bio-resin. Seeing is believing, and

for the 176,000 visitors at the K-show it was clear to see that our biomaterial makes the transition from polluting plastics to earth-friendly biodegradables simple and easy.

New grades of Solinatra

Of course, nothing beats meeting so many of you face-to-face and sharing stories and conversations about how we are all trying to transition from traditional plastics to new plant-based materials to sustain the environment. This has helped us to further define our Research and Development programs. The rapid expansion of our R&D already has enabled the development of new materials and manufacturing trials, including the launch of new grades of material such as Solinatra® Barrier, Solinatra® Universal Food, Solinatra® Universal Light and Solinatra® Universal Dark. 2023 will bring more exciting developments, including grades for thermoforming and pipe extrusion.

Meeting you

It is often said that the greatest asset of any company is its people, and we are proud to have grown a talented and diverse team of professionals. This year we have expanded our teams in the Netherlands and the UK, as well as opening offices in the USA, Türkiye and Indonesia. Our global team works hard to achieve our ambitions. In January Dr. Simone Payne will be representing Solinatra at the Managing Plastic Waste conference in London and in February we once again will be returning to the Packaging Innovation show in Birmingham. From the Netherlands to Tokyo, we are scheduled for many more trade shows in 2023 – visit our events page or follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date.

All the best wishes for 2023,

Best regards,

Roland Pluut
