A Year of Sustainable Milestones

2023 has been an incredible year. We have a lot to celebrate – great projects, new clients, and exciting product development. We’ve tried new things and built new possibilities. All the remarkable milestones building towards a greener future, where polluting plastics are a thing of the past and biodegradable materials are the norm.

As 2023 will soon be behind us, let this wrap-up be a celebration of our growth, collaboration, and shared success!

 New Material Innovation

Innovation have been a cornerstone of our efforts, that brings the power of biodegradable materials that will redefine packaging and single-use items. We began the year with the launch of the development of the first naturally biodegradable plastic for thermoforming applications, in a project supported by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK.

Solinatra thermoforming grades will revolutionise everyday products that traditionally rely on harmful plastic. With Solinatra materials, food trays, packaging, and products for the realms of food, pharmaceuticals, beauty, and cosmetics will break down naturally without any harmful contamination or microplastics. Furthermore, the collaborative development of the extrusion grade opens opportunities for tube extrusion, particularly for the creation of biodegradable drinking straws—a promising step towards more sustainable alternatives in single-use items.

This project is one of many innovative developments to come. Solinatra adopts the positive attributes of traditional plastic, including moulding capability, flexibility, durability, strength. These characteristics make Solinatra seamlessly integrate into existing processing machinery, ensuring a smooth transition for manufacturers and brands.

Empowering Sustainability Solution Through Collaboration

Knowledge is power. A future without plastic pollution is possible with Solinatra's fully natural, biodegradable solutions. This vision led to the launch of Solinatra-ATMI IGI Center of Excellence in Surakarta, Indonesia.

By bringing together ATMI's engineering expertise and Solinatra compostable materials, this pioneering educational establishment is at the forefront of a revolutionary shift from environmentally harmful plastics to more sustainable manufacture, inline with Sustainable Development Goals and net zero targets.

OK Compost Industrial Certification from TÜV Austria

Solinatra has been leading the way to create a sustainable coffee culture with our biodegradable coffee capsule, and earlier this year we were pleased to announce that coffee capsules made of Solinatra were certified composable by TÜV Austria.

Nespresso compatible coffee capsules made of Solinatra have been awarded “OK compost Industrial” by TÜV Austria CERT GmbH, confirming that our 100% natural, plant-based capsules are the most eco-friendly choice.

Our innovative capsules have high oxygen and water vapour barrier properties, ensuring your coffee stays as fresh as the morning dew. Solinatra compostable coffee capsules will not only give you the perfect brew but also earn a green thumbs-up from TÜV Austria.

Edie Net-Zero Awards Finalist

Solinatra was shortlisted for the 2023 edie Net-Zero Awards, in the Innovation of the Year: Projects and Products category. Edie Net-Zero Awards recognise and reward the individuals and organisations that are spearheading the transition towards a net-zero carbon economy, and is a sister scheme to the edie Awards - the world's most prestigious accolade for sustainable businesses. Whilst we didn't win the award, it was a honour to be recognised for our commitment to sustainability and innovation!

Witnessing Solinatra Live!

This year we exhibited in more than 20 events, trade shows, and conferences around the globe, to share our innovative materials to a diverse audience that included manufacturers, food industry practitioners, fellow sustainable innovators, brands, and curious consumers.

Following on from the success of our partnership with FANUC at the K show in 2022, in 2023 we continued our collaboration at Interplas in the UK and  IPF Japan - as well as their open house event at their state of the art facility in Coventry, UK. Giving live demonstrations of the processing of our sustainable biomaterials in FANUC injection moulding machinery, visitors to the events saw how effortlessly Solinatra materials processed, proving that the transition from plastic to Solinatra is smooth and easy.

Looking Ahead to 2024

The end of the calendar is getting closer, but we're excited to welcome the new year and continue with our exciting plans for 2024. Solinatra's commitment to creating a positive impact is unwavering, and we believe that the upcoming year promises more possibilities to achieve net zero and a greener future.
