Solinatra Shortlisted for edie Net-Zero Award

We are delighted to share that Solinatra have been shortlisted for the 2023 edie Net-Zero Awards, in the Innovation of the Year: Projects and Products category.

Text reads "We're finalists! edie Net Zero Awards". In the background are blue to red stripes, echoing the 'warming stripes' graphic originally published by climatologist Ed Hawkins.

A sister scheme to the edie Awards - the world's most prestigious accolade for sustainable businesses - the new edie Net-Zero Awards have been created to recognise and reward the individuals and organisations that are spearheading the transition towards a net-zero carbon economy.

Solinatra is a world-leading material, offering a truly sustainable alternative to single use plastics. 100% natural, with zero fossil fuel ingredients, products made of Solinatra are biodegradable and compostable, leaving nothing behind but biomass. Solinatra is a material that reduces carbon emissions, reduces reliance on fossil fuels and promotes a more circular economy.

Solinatra was developed in response to the plastic pollution crisis; a viable, sustainable alternative to plastics didn’t exist, so we created Solinatra.

Plastic production is responsible for 4% of global GHG emissions, globally plastic recycling stands at only 10%, and the impacts of microplastics and nanoplastics are causing havoc with the health of humans, animals, the ocean, the seas and ecosystems. The production, use and end of life of plastics all negatively impact our planet and accelerate the climate crisis.

Solinatra utilises natural waste products, such as coffee grinds and the byproducts of harvested crops, to create a biomaterial that can be processed and manufactured into products that would otherwise be made of plastic. At the end of use, products made of Solinatra are biodegradable and compostable, and can be composted at home or collected with food waste for industrial composting where items will fully degrade without leaving behind any pollutants or microplastics.

Solinatra has a lower carbon footprint than plastic, uses renewable feedstocks and at the end of use can be composted – creating fertiliser for the next crop. Solinatra helps achieve net zero by providing an alternative to plastics, and enabling a more circular economy.

Solinatra is the ideal material for single use, food contaminated and hard to recycle products. Food packaging represents a massive market opportunity for Solinatra, offering a low carbon alternative that doesn’t compromise on functionality or sustainability.

The awards celebrate the greatest innovations and achievements in the journey to net zero, and we wish all the finalists good luck!
